Funny how my country is slowly turning into facism while trying to control free speech in the name of "social harmony and obscenity". A person was jailed before for criticizing the pm. When tiktok was banned before, some woman were jailed for trying to use a vpn. Multiple people rely on these services to talk to their relatives, sons, daughters, husbands as our country has turned to poverty so most people leave it to go work for foreign land where they don't get to see their family members. Many parents don't know how a phone works, they only know how to call their sons/daughters through messenger. Many students use sites like youtube for educational purposes and news as most of the news is already controlled by the government here.

But go ahead, celebrate censorship because of how evil these social media companies are (while using and commenting on reddit). It is not banned yet for me but soon, it will be probably. It's sad to see censorship being openly celebrated just to own it to the corps as long as it isn't happening to them.

Our whole government is corrupt and this is yet another step to isolate people but ig that is ok as long as it's not affecting you all.

Speaking from Nepal, absolutely horrible decision. 26 social media apps banned including Reddit, not to mention the biggest ones. Of course a lot of young people will use VPN but what about the older ones who don't know how to use that and many use Facebook messenger and WhatsApp to chat with their children abroad. YouTube is a part of life in Nepal as well. This is absolutely crazy and yes Nepal govt has justified it by citing Supreme Court order and they have ordered to register these companies by a Government issued directive, not even a law passed by Parliament. 

Also, the reason Nepal govt wants the social media apps to register inside Nepal (open a office in Nepal and appoint 3 representatives) is so that they can order removal of content they don't like. Basically, the two largest parties in Nepal have formed a govt and a new party has emerged which has done well using social media. 

Meanwhile, Tiktok and Viber are legal in Nepal..

Nepal has ordered the internet service providers to block access to all 26 major social media and communication platforms including Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, X (formerly known as Twitter), LinkedIn, Reddit, WhatsApp and Snapchat. The government took this decision after all the companies failed to register with the government within a seven-day deadline.

The move of banning the social media platforms comes after the Supreme Court directive in a contempt of court case, which instructed the government to ensure all domestic and foreign-origin online platforms register with authorities before operating in the country and to monitor unwanted content.

I tried a bunch of VPNs after the ban, most were either painfully slow or asked for way too much personal info.

The one that’s been working smoothly for me is VPN UK: Free VPN &amp; Browser. No login needed, unlimited, and it’s UK-based so it doesn’t feel like one of those random free apps logging everything.

Streaming + Reddit both open fine on it. Might help anyone else stuck right now. Stay safe 🙏
